Training Class Overview
At GSLTC classes, our trainers teach owners to train their dogs. Our trainers use positive training methods at all levels of training. Clicker training is our basic method of instruction. Our classes combine group instruction with individual attention. Our goal is to meet the needs of each owner and each dog. Our classes each year begin in early January and end at Thanksgiving weekend (Puppy classes run through mid-December).
The first step for prospective students is to attend a Behavior and Training
101 (BAT101) session before registering for a class. This class is a 2-hour slide presentation with video clips and live demonstrations. Material covered includes how dogs learn, what training methods we use, tips on managing common behavior problems at home, and how to prepare for training classes. BAT101 is required before a student can register for an entry-level class.
GSLTC is pleased to have created and instituted a six-month Trainers’ course for its trainers. The course includes topics such training theory, aspects of canine natural history and behavior, dog training equipment, coaching skills, how humans learn, and sensitivity to individuals who have disabilities. It does not cover specific methods or techniques for training dogs. Participants apprentice in classes while taking the course, then advance to assistant trainers and, in some cases, eventually to head trainers. We are very pleased that our head trainers include Certified Pet Dog Trainers with the Association of Pet Dog Trainers as well as graduates of the Karen Pryor Academy.
Important Information about All Classes
Owners are required to bring their dogs' up-to-date shot records with them on the first day of their first class session, unless they presented them when they registered for class at Behavior and Training 101 (see below). Dogs' records must show that they have current DHLPP and bordatella vaccinations. Owners who do not follow a traditional schedule of vaccination must submit a letter signed by their veterinarian indicating that their dog is free of disease and may attend class. A rabies vaccination is required for all dogs over sixteen weeks of age.

Behavior and Training 101 (BAT101)
This dynamic introduction to how dogs learn and how to manage common behavior issues is a PowerPoint presentation with video clips and live demonstrations. This low-cost class is very popular; pre-registration is encouraged. Attendance at a BAT101 session is required before beginning any entry-level class listed below, but it is also available as a stand-alone class – there is no obligation to register for any other class. Do not bring your dog! This presentation is designed for owners to attend without dogs. Owners who wish to continue into other classes are given individual assistance in choosing the most appropriate ones for their dogs.
